PNC 7

PNC 7 : Photonitrosation of Cyclohexane. A photochemical process for making caprolactam (a precursor for nylon) from cyclohexane, nitrosyl chloride, and hydrogen chloride. The first photochemical product is C6H10O+NOH+2HCl. cyclohexanone oxime: UV C6H12 + NOCl + HCl. This, on treatment with sulfuric acid, then undergoes the Beckmann rearrangement to caprolactam. The nitrosyl chloride is made by reacting nitrosyl sulfuric acid (made from oxides of nitrogen and sulfuric acid) with hydrogen chloride gas: NOHSO4 + HCl + NOCl + H2SO4.
