Pneumatic Structures

Pneumatic Structures : Air-supported buildings are being developed for many commercial and industrial applications. The most usual types of construction are: (1) an air-inflated structure which has inflated ribs formed of pvc or other plastics or fabric membrane, which provide the support for the enclosure. (2) an inflated double-walled structure with air contained between the membranes. (3) internally inflated air house consisting of a single membrane supported by a small pressure above atmospheric spread over the whole of the structures internal surface. Fans are used to keep the pressure `topped-up'. Nylon reinforced pvc is often used as the membrane. The fabrics used are inherently flameproof but most would melt in a fire and any holes formed by the membrane melting would cause the structure to collapse on to the fire. Adequate exits should he provided, travel distance to an exit being limited, the exits should he provided with rigid frames and an audible fire warning device used that can be heard throughout the building
