RDD 2 : Radiological Dispersal Device. An RDD may be a so-called dirty bomb which uses conventional high explosives to scatter dangerous material such as radioactive cesium or cobalt in order to contaminate areas or structures. As mainly an economic weapon, physical damage from an explosive RDD might be limited, but with widespread psychological effects. An attack using a dirty bomb might or might not cause mass casualties but should be expected to cause widespread disruption, fear, and major damage to the economy. Decontamination and clean up could be expensive and prolonged, possibly over years. An alternative RDD involves quiet and insidious dispersal of contaminants without an announcement by an explosion
