Sea Cocks and Valves : Under-water cocks and valves fitted on the ship's side in the machinery space from which pipes lead to inner distributing valves. They are the means by which sea water is obtained for filling tanks, and other services for which sea water is used. They are fitted with non-return valves to prevent sea water entering should, for instance, the bilge suction be opened while the tanks are being filled, etc. They must be fitted on the shell plating in easily accessible places above the level of the stokehold and engine room platforms, or are to be fitted on strong iron steel or stands of a height sufficient to lift them up to the level of these platforms
