Azimuth 11

Azimuth 11 : General. The length of the arc of the horizon (in degrees) intercepted between a given point and an adopted reference direction, usually true north, and measured clockwise from the reference direction. Thus, azimuth is a horizontal direction expressed in degrees. Azimuth may be synonymous with bearing, but the latter is a navigation term and can be modified in several ways. In seismology the epicenter of an earthquake could be approximated from data at one station by determining the time difference between p and s waves, which may give the distance to the earthquake source, and the azimuth which could be determined by differences in the time of arrival of the signal at two or more seismometers, or an array of seismometers, telemetering data to that station. Any point on or above the horizon can be located by its angles of azimuth and elevation plus either height or distance (or slant range) data
