Tracheotomy


Tracheotomy : (led) An operation in which an opening is made in the trachea for the purpose of inserting a tube through which oxygen is pumped into the lungs. Used as an emergency measure when the airway it the throat is constricted or blocked. Also called: Tracheostomy. Note: The technique was once used freely to alleviate breathing difficulties of burn victims with upper respiratory involvement, but is now used cautiously because of the critical danger of ulceration and infection
