The PHMSA has public responsibilities for safe and secure movement of hazardous materials to industry and consumers by all transportation modes, including the nation's pipelines. PHMSA oversees the safety of the more than 1.2 million daily shipments of hazardous materials in the United States and the 64 percent of the nation's energy that is transported by pipelines"
