Dimethylbenzene. An aromatic compound having the formula C6H4(CH3)2. Xylene is a major component of gasoline. A mixture of toluene and xylene is frequently used as an automotive paint thinner. Xylene is actually a mixture of three isomers, ortho, meta and para xylene, which have the methyl groups in different positions relative to each other on the benzene ring.
