Chain Reaction 01 : (Chem; Nucl Phys) A self-sustaining chemical or nuclear process in which one or more of the species or agents necessary for the reaction to continue are regenerated by the reaction itself. Note: In a nuclear chain reaction, a fissionable nucleus that is split by a neutron releases energy and one or more additional neutrons. These neutrons split other fissionable nuclei, releasing more energy and more neutrons, which makes the reaction self-sustaining as long as enough fissionable nuclei are present. In the case of combustion or a chemical reaction, a chain reaction is a process in which one of the agents necessary for the reaction is produced by the reaction itself (e. g. , heat or reactive radicals)
