European Agency for Health and Safety at Work 1

European Agency for Health and Safety at Work 1 : The Agency aims to make Europe's workplaces safer, healthier and more productive, with an emphasis on prevention. The Agency (based in Bilbao, Spain) acts as a catalyst for developing, collecting, analysing and disseminating information on occupational safety and health. As a tripartite European Union (EU) organization, it brings together representatives of governments, employers and workers' organizations from the EU Member States. Its network also includes EFTA and EU candidate countries, as well as Australia, Canada and the United States. The enlargement of the Agency's network through the inclusion of the ten new Member States will result in an increased focus on topics of particular importance for these countries (construction, agriculture, noise at work). The Agency continues to develop in line with the priorities set out in the Community Strategy for Health and Safety and is in the process of establishing a new Risk Observatory. The Agency also acts as an interchange on safety and health matters with developing countries and international organizations (World Health Organisation (WHO), International Labour Organization (ILO) and Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO)). The Agency is headed by a Director appointed by the Administrative Board (See: Council Regulation 2062/94 of 18 July 1994 establishing a European Agency for Health and Safety at Work. Amended by Council Regulation 1643/95, of 29 June 1995 and Council Regulation 1654/2003 of 18 June 2003. See: Health and safety at work; Health, hygiene and safety at work
