A metric prefix denoting 109 or one billion (in the American meaning of the word billion). This prefix was coined from the Greek word gigas, meaning giant. The Greeks pronounced the word with a two hard g sounds, as in "gig." The prefix is sometimes pronounced with an initial soft g sound, as in "jig." Some dictionaries favor this choice, but the hard g pronunciation seems more common
