Gillick Competency

Gillick Competency : A term used in medical law to describe when a minor may be able to consent to his or her own medical treatment, despite a young age. The standard is based on a decision of the House of Lords in the case Gillick v West Norfolk and Wisbech Area Health Authority [1985] 3 AII ER 402. The health professional decides if the child is able to provide consent for medical procedures based on the concept of 'Gillick competency'
