Gland 1 : (1) (Mech Eng) Soft packing and mechanical retaining components provided around rotating or reciprocating shafts to prevent leakage of fluid under pressure or in motion. Cf: Gasket. (2) (Physiol) Any body organ that produces a secretion, whether excreting through a duct (exocrine, such as the salivary glands) or emptying directly into the blood stream (endocrine, such as the thyroid gland).
