Alara 05

Alara 05 : (a) As Low As Reasonably Achievable; concept utilized in relation to intervention levels following the release of dangerous chemical or nuclear materials. [PDM, 2000: Disaster Terminology; from Debacker, et al., 1999]; (b) An approach to radiological control to manage and control exposures (individual and collective) to the work force and to the general public at levels as low as is reasonable, taking into account social, technical, economic, practical and public policy considerations. As used in this Manual, ALARA is not a dose limit but a process that has the objective of attaining doses as far below the applicable controlling limits as is reasonably achievable. [USDOE, 1998: Radiological Control Manual]; (c) Acronym for "As Low As Reasonably Achievable," means making every reasonable effort to maintain exposures to ionizing radiation as far below the dose limits as practical, consistent with the purpose for which the licensed activity is undertaken, taking into account the state of technology, the economics of improvements in relation to state of technology, the economics of improvements in relation to benefits to the public health and safety, and other societal and socioeconomic considerations, and in relation to utilization of nuclear energy and licensed materials in the public interest. (See: 10 CFR 20.1003). [USDOE, 2000: RAIS Glossary]
