Guard Rail (Track) 1
Guard Rail (Track) 1 : A rail or other structure that is laid parallel to the running rails of a track to prevent the wheels from being derailed or to hold the wheels in alignment to prevent their flanges from striking the points of turnouts, crossing frogs, or the points of switches. (When derailment occurs, the guard track prevents wheels from leaving the ends of ties, and reduces the tendency of cars to overturn or to strike structures at minimum lateral clearance to track)
