H/V Spectral Ratio

H/V Spectral Ratio :

Ratio of the Fourier amplitude spectra of horizontal and vertical components of ambient noise, or of earthquake ground motions, recorded at a site. Typically used to identify the presence of site-specific dominant frequencies in such motions. If this technique is applied to microtremor data, it is sometimes called Nakamura's method. Spectral ratios are typically used in the receiver function method for source equalization of recordings from different teleseismic earthquakes at a one station before summation and inversion for velocity-depth structure. See: Chapter 14 of this Manual and Faccioli and Pessina (2003).
