Kroll (2)
Kroll (2) : A process for making a metal by reducing its halide with another metal. Thus titanium is prepared by reducing titanium tetrachloride with magnesium: TiCl4 + 2Mg = Ti + 2MgCl2. Also used commercially for making tantalum, niobium, and zirconium. The reduction takes place in a batch reactor under an inert gas atmosphere. (2) See: Abgas-Turbo-Wascher Von Kroll.
