Asbestos 02 : (Mineral) A noncombustible, chemically inert, fibrous gray or greenish silicate mineral used for fireproofing and heat insulation. Asbestos is found in several forms. A variety of serpentine is called chrysolite or fibrous amphibole. Amianthus is a fine silky variety. Note: Asbestos is used also for brake linings; packing and gaskets; protective clothing; and heat, fire, and electrical insulation; as well as in building materials (shingles, siding, tiles). Asbestos dust, and esp the fibers, are hazardous to the respiratory system, causing a lung disease called asbestosis
