Phosgene 1 : Chemistry and Chemical Disasters. (Chem; Toxicol) A colorless, tasteless gas with a disagreeable odor, COCl2, formed from carbon monoxide and chlorine in the presence of hot charcoal. Syn: Carbonyl Chloride. Note: Phosgene forms also when carbon tetrachloride is applied to burning materials in the presence of carbon monoxide. A strong, delayed-action irritant; 2. 5 ppm is deadly. When inhaled, the gas dissolves in the mucus of the respiratory tract and forms hydrochloric acid
