Poison 01

Poison 01 : (1) (Toxicol) A substance that chemically or physicochemically causes serious tissue damage or organic malfunction from small doses. Note: Four types of poison are distinguished: a) asphyxiants and depressants, such as carbon monoxide, cyanide, and certain hydrocarbons that cause anoxia and circulatory collapse; b) surface agents, such as acids and alkalis; c) systemic poisons such as arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium compounds that damage specific body organs or tissues and cause local irritation at the point of entry; and d) systemic poisons such as blood poisons and nerve gases that do not cause local irritation at the point of entry but attack specific portions of the body after absorption. Poisons are also described as corrosives, irritants, asphyxiants, enzyme inhibitors, neurotoxins (nerve gases), and hemotoxins (blood poisons). See: First Aid. (2) (Nucl Phys) A neutron-absorbing material, such as boron, used in control rods to absorb neutrons in nuclear reactors to decrease reactivity
