Poisson Distribution 1 : (Math) A distribution whose frequency function is of the form: P (x) = (m (x) /x!) d (-m), the probability that x events will occur; where m is a parameter that is both the mean and variance, the mean and variance of the Poisson distribution being equal. NOTE: This distribution often appears in observed events which are very improbable compared to all possible events, but which occur occasionally since so many trials occur, e. g. , traffic deaths, industrial accidents, and radioactive emissions
