Power (x) 1

Power (x) 1 : A unit expressing the magnifying power of an optical system. The power is defined to be the angular diameter of the image formed by the system divided by the angular diameter of the original object being observed. In simple telescopes this is equal to the focal length of the primary objective (the big lens or mirror) divided by the focal length of the eyepiece lens. For binoculars, the power is customarily followed by the diameter of the objective lenses, in millimeters, so "8x40" indicates binoculars with a magnifying power of 8 and lenses of diameter 40 mm
