Predictive Maintenance 1 : Predictive maintenance consists of the actions necessary to monitor, find trends, and analyze parameters, properties and performance characteristics or signatures associated with structures, systems, and components (SSCs), facilities or pieces of equipment to discern whether or not a state or condition may be approaching which is indicative of deteriorating performance or impending failure, where the intended function of the SSCs, facilities or pieces of equipment may be compromised. Predictive maintenance activities involve continuous or periodic monitoring and diagnosis in order to forecast component degradation so that "as-needed" planned maintenance can be initiated prior to failure. Not all SSC, facility or equipment conditions and failure modes can be monitored and diagnosed in advance; therefore, predictive maintenance should be selectively applied. To the extent that predictive maintenance can be relied on without large ncertainties, it is normally preferable to activities such as periodic internal inspection or equipment overhauls
