Probability of Occurrence 1 : Probability of an event of a given magnitude being equaled or exceeded in a given period of time. In the case of hydro-meteorological events this period of time is generally set to one year (cf. return period). In the context of natural events the point is often, whether or not a certain value being exceeded so that the conditions of a system are no longer fully controllable, thus resulting in damage.
