Proximate Analysis 1 : Organic combustibles may be resolved into four constituents which when associated together total 100%. The constituents are fixed carbon, volatile matter, ash content and moisture which may be referred to separately. The proximate analysis of a coal serves to afford some indication of the yields likely to be obtained when it is carbonised since fixed carbon plus ash represents the coke or carbonaceous residue which would be derived, whereas volatile matter plus moisture equals the yield of permanent gas plus condensible matter
