Pump, Capacity of

Pump, Capacity of : The capacity of a fire pump is determined by its size, speed and power to drive it, the capacity being indicated in litres per minute. With reciprocating pumps the theoretical capacity is equal to A X L X N X S where A = cross-sectional area of plunger or piston in ems, L = length of stroke in ems, N = number of cylinders and S = number of strokes per minute. One of the characteristics of a centrifugal pump is that the pressure developed as well as the efficiency and power absorbed varies with the quantity of water delivered
