Pump, Fire Engine : In small vessels the donkey pump is employed as a fire pump, a discharge pipe being led to the upper deck to which a hose may be attached. In larger ships, liners and passenger carrying ships, an independent fire pump is carried which discharges into the fire main, a galvanised iron pipe 51 mm (2 in. to 102 mm (4 in. in diameter leading fore and after on the deck along the bulwark or where most convenient, having couplings at intervals to which hoses may be attached. In passenger carrying ships branches from it are led to decks above or below so as to reach accommodation spaces, etc
