Pump, Pressure Measurement

Pump, Pressure Measurement : A pressure gauge is fitted to the delivery side of a pump to indicate the pressure in the pump. In any centrifugal fire pump the pressure and discharge vary inversely. That is the pump is able to supply either a low quantity of water at high pressure or a large quantity of water at low pressure. The pressure is measured by a Bourdon tube or a diaphragm type gauge. The Bourdon tube consists of a tube usually made of phosphor-bronze, oval in section, sealed at one end, and in the shape of the greater part of the circumference of a circle. With more pressure the tube will tend to straighten out and if less, curl. One end of the tube is connected to the pressure source, the other free end is connected by a mechanism, which multiplies the movement, to a pointer. The operation of the diaphragm type gauge depends on a non-ferrous metal, corrugated diaphragm, which is fixed at its periphery but free to move at is centre. The movement of the diaphragm is transmitted by a multiplying mechanism to a pointer
