Atmosphere 01
Atmosphere 01 : (1) A gas mixture used for respiration. (2) (Geophys; Abb: atm) The envelope of air surrounding the earth. Note: Approx half of the atmosphere lies within 3. 5 miles and three quarters within 7 miles of the earth's surface. Almost all weather, clouds, and storms occur in the troposphere, which extends to about 10 miles above the earth. The atmosphere consists principally of nitrogen and oxygen, with lesser quantities of other gases, water vapor, and pollutants. See: Air; Air Mass. See also: Air Pressure; Standard Atmosphere
