Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Disasters. (Phys; Chem) The smallest particle of an element, indivisible by chemical means, that exhibits the characteristic properties of the element. An atom consists of a positively charged nucleus and one or more negatively charged electrons moving around the nucleus in one or more orbits. Atoms of the same species are chemically identical. Note: The smallest part of a com pound is a molecule, which is made up of two or more atoms. A drop of water contains about six sextillion (6x1021) atoms
