Range-Finding Tests

Range-Finding Tests : (Toxicol; Abb: RF) A series of tests to determine the lethality of toxic substances. Note: Since toxic products can enter the system through the skin, respiratory canal, or the gastrointestinal tract, different dosage techniques must be used in each case. Often exponential dosage scales are used, such as 1, 2, 4, 8, . . . mg/kg of animal body weight. Because of sensitivity it may be necessary to use a more closely spaced scale, such as 1, 1. 2, 1. 44, 1. 73, etc. Doses are found that kill no test animals (LD0) and that kill all animals (LD100). The 50% lethal dose is derived from these two limit quantities
