Ranks and Titles

Ranks and Titles : (Fire Pr) Positions of responsibility and authority in the fire service management and operations hierarchy and the official designations and names for them. Note: There is no uniformity in ranks or official titles in the fire service. Depending on the size of a given fire department, nature of jurisdiction, and local custom, fire department heads are variously designated as chief of department, chief engineer, chief fire marshal, fire marshal, director general manager, or fire commissioner. Subordinate titles, not necessarily in order of rank, are district chief, battalion fire chief, fire chief deputy fire chief, assistant fire chief, administrative assistant, captain, lieutenant, platoon commander , and sergeant. In smaller departments officers may have both line and staff responsibilities. Many departments, esp the larger ones, have special titles, such as superintendent of fire alarm, assistant superintendent as well as numerous other designations for officers of specialized fire service units, including head of fire prevention, principal fire training officer, superintendent of apparatus and maintenance, superintendent of communications, etc. See: Trumpet
