Rayleigh Wave 7

Rayleigh Wave 7 :

Coupled P and SV waves trapped near the surface of the Earth and propagating along it. Their existence was first predicted by Rayleigh (1887) for a homogeneous half-space, for which the velocity of propagation is 0.88 to 0.95 times the shear velocity, depending on the Poisson's ratio, and their particle motion is retrograde elliptic near the surface. They can exist, in general, in a vertically heterogeneous media bounded by a free surface. See: Udias (2002, p. 87-88), Kulhanek (2002, p. 334-335), Aki and Richards (2002 or 2009, p. 155-157), and the biography of Lord Rayleigh (1842-1919) in Howell (2003)
