Atomic Weight 1

Atomic Weight 1 : (Chem; Phys; Abb: at. wt) A number assigned to each element approx equal to the sum of the number of protons and neutrons found in the nucleus of the atom. This sum is also called: Mass Number. Note: The atomic weight of oxygen, for example, is 16, with most oxygen atoms containing 8 neutrons plus 8 protons; aluminum is 27, with 14 neutrons and 13 protons. The mass unit is defined as one-twelfth the mass of C12. See: Atomic Mass Unit; Atomic Weight Unit
