Atomic Weight Unit
Atomic Weight Unit : (Chem; Phys; Abb: awu) An international mass unit defined as one-twelfth the mass of carbon-12. It was adopted in 1962 for use in both physics and chemistry. See: Atomic Mass Unit. Note: Prior to 1962 physicists used a scale based on 016 = 16 exactly, while chemists used the isotopic average of natural oxygen as equal to 16
