Risk Assessment 036 : A process of evaluation including the identification of the attendant uncertainties, of the likelihood and severity of an adverse effect (s) /event(s) occurring to man or the environment following exposure under defined conditions to a risk source(s). A risk assessment comprises hazard identification, hazard characterisation, exposure assessment and risk characterisation. Note: A process intended to calculate or estimate the risk for a given target system following exposure to a particular substance, taking into account the inherent characteristics of a substance of concern as well as the characteristics of the specific target system. The process includes four steps: hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, risk characterisation. European Commission (2000)
