Risk Assessment 094 : The process of defining the risk associated with the use of a pesticide. It is usually expressed as a numerical probability, or as a margin of safety, and involves identifying any hazards, assessing the likely exposure of individuals and groups, and calculating the relationship between the exposure dose and any responses, or effects, in those exposed. Risk assessments are carried out when residues are found in foods to determine whether, at the levels found, they present a concern for consumer health or not. Consumer risk assessments are routinely conducted as part of the approval process for pesticides, and are based on residue trials. A pesticide will only be approved for use if any risks to consumers are acceptable
