Attenuation 02 : (1) (Phys; Symb: a) a. A reduction in quantity, intensity, or strength, as of a signal, light, or some other form of energy. b. The reduction in flux or power density with distance from the source, due to adsorption and scattering, as the reduction in electromagnetic wave amplitude. Syn: Extinction. Cf: absorption. Note: Attenuation does not include the inver se square a law of decrease in intensity with distance from the source. (2) (Med) Reduction in virulence or toxicity by repeated inoculation, successive cultures, etc. (3) (Acoust) The difference, expressed in decibels, of the sound intensity at a standard reference location as compared with sound intensity at another location which is acoustically farther from the source
