Runoff, Discharge

Runoff, Discharge :

That part of fallen precipitation which flows away in brooks and rivers (and underground). Discharge is measured in terms of a volume of water per unit of time and is stated in cubic meters per second (m3/s). Total discharge is comprised of surface runoff, subsurface interflow, and base runoff from the groundwater. Surface runoff and interflow taken together are called the direct runoff. (1) That part of precipitation that appears as streamflow. (2) Water flowing on or below the land surface under gravitational influence.
