Rupture Velocity 3

Rupture Velocity 3 :

The velocity vR at which a rupture front moves along the surface of the fault during an earthquake. Depending also on stress drop, vR may vary in a wide range between some 20% and 95% of the shear-wave velocity vS, yet being > 60% vS for most of the large earthquakes. Occasionally, vR > vS has been reported from so-called super shear earthquakes, whereas for tsunami earthquakes vR may become < 30% of vS. See Kanamaori and Brodsky (2004)
