A process for making nitric acid by the atmospheric oxidation of ammonia. The nitrous gases from the oxidation are absorbed in azeotropic nitric acid in the presence of oxygen under pressure: 2NO2 + 1⁄2O2 + H2O + 2HNO3. (Check source for accuracy of chemical formula)
