Saponification Latin, Sapo, Soap : A process for making soap by the alkaline hydrolysis of animal or vegetable fats, using aqueous sodium or potassium hydroxide. Glycerol is a coproduct. The term is now more generally used for any alkaline ester hydrolysis: R+COOR+ + NaOH + R+COONa + R+OH. (Check source for accuracy of chemical formula)
