SARSAT 1
SARSAT 1 : SARSAT stands for Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking. It is a system of satellites operated by the governments of Canada, Russia, France and the United States. The satellites pick up distress signals from emergency radio transmitters (SEE ELT) and relay them to ground based Mission Control Centres (MCCs). The ground stations pass the information on to the nearest Rescue Coordination Centre (SEE RCC), which dispatches a rescue unit. The SARSAT system can localize a distress signal to within 30 kilometers of its source. (Marine SAR)
