(Phys) A process in which particle pathways change. Note: Scattering occurs when particles collide with atoms, nuclei, and other particles or when they interact with magnetic fields. If the internal energy of the particle, as contrasted with its kinetic energy, is unchanged by the collision, scattering is elastic; if there is a change in the internal energy, the process is called inelastic scattering
