Scholler-Tornesch

Scholler-Tornesch : A process for making single-cell protein from wood. The wood is saccharified by heating with dilute sulfuric acid. The resulting sugars are then fermented to ethanol, using the common yeast Saccharomeces cerevisae. The process was developed and used in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s. See also: Heiskenskjold
