Sea-Floor Spreading 2 : A term introduced by Dietz (1961). It is now taken to be the creation of new oceanic lithosphere as plates separate at midocean ridges, where upwelling mantle materials fills the growing gaps between the moving plates. See Uyeda (2002), and magnetic reversal
