Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) 08 : An atmosphere-supplying respirator that supplies a respirable air atmosphere to the user from a breathing air source that is independent of the ambient environment and designed to be carried by the user. For the purposes of this standard, where this term is used without any qualifier, it indicates only open-circuit self-contained breathing apparatus or combination SCBA/SARs. For the purposes of this standard, combination SCBA/SARs are encompassed by the terms self-contained breathing apparatus or SCBA.
