Semester (sem) : An informal unit of time. The word semester comes from the Latin words for "six months," and originally a semester was understood to equal 6 months or 1/2 year. However, the word is now used chiefly to mean half the academic year at a school or college, a period of time which can vary from 15 to 21 weeks
