Shear Stress 5


Shear Stress 5 : Force per unit area exerted upon an infinitesimal surface in the direction tangential to that surface. There is some confusion over the usage of this term (see text for discussion in Ruff (2002)). In three-dimensions, there are two independent force components tangential to an area element, thus further specification is required. Another definition of shear stress cites the difference between two principal stresses, while still another definition cites half the difference between two principal stresses. The latter definition is compatible with the Mohr's Circle representation (see Mohr diagram) of the stress state. See normal stress; also Ruff (2002), and Figure 1 in Ben-Zion (2003)
