SHS Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis
SHS Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis : A process for manufacturing ceramics and intermetallic compounds by exothermic reactions in which the heat of reaction is large enough to sustain the propagation of a combustion wave through the reactants. The reactants can be mixed powders, or a powder with a gas. It has been used to synthesize TiB2, ZrB2, TiC, and AlN from the elements, and to make a number of refractory composites of oxides with metals
